Namibia - A Deep Dive with Tim Mannakee

Namibia is a land of raw natural beauty, where ancient landscapes tell stories of resilience, survival, and an ever-evolving ecosystem. Namibia is a place where the earth’s history is etched into every grain of sand and every rocky outcrop. Where vast, seemingly desolate expanses teem with the most vibrant of colours; where light and shadow creates scenes of haunting beauty and mystery; and where its resilient wildlife adapt to some of the harshest environments on earth, even in the endless dunes of the Namib Desert—the oldest desert in the world.

The Namib Desert

The Namib landscape is a striking combination of endless dunes, striking rock formations, gravel plains, barren and cracked earth, and an overwhelming sense of ancient, untouched wilderness showcasing a stark yet mesmerising beauty…

…and sand, and more sand, everywhere that casually and delibertaly consumes the occasional signs of human habitation.

Dunes - Waves in a Sea of Time

The dunes of the Namib desert stand tall, some the tallest in the world, guardians. Sunset paints the dunes in fiery hues, rising and falling in a rhythmic rhyme, reds and oranges - brilliant views.

In certain areas, like Sossusvlei, ancient, desiccated clay pans are scattered with dead camelthorn trees, their skeletal forms creating a haunting contrast against the vibrant dunes.

Wildlife - if you can find it…

With much of the land comprising the Namib and Kalahari deserts, Namibia is characterized by extremely low rainfall, high temperatures, and vast stretches of barren land. Animal life is highly challenged with many choosing to migrate to less arid environments. Outside of conservation areas only highly adapted species have managed to survive in these environments. But explore and you may discover extradoniary examples of survival and adaption from 2 headed and 8 legged giraffes, multicolured beetles, lonely cheetahs hunting lonely springbok, ostriches enjoying a sunset stroll, to the noble oryx whose ability to thrive in numbers in the driest of landscapes is truly remarkable.
